What type of glazing for your conservatory?
You had your conservatory built a long time ago. You may even have bought your house and the conservatory was already there. It's probably in need of renovation. As with every room in a house, taking care of your extension will keep it clean and charming for a long time to come. However, the seasons, the weather and everyday life will inevitably damage the materials used in this living space. Then it's time to give it a facelift!
How to choose your glazing?
There are as many window components as there are selection criteria. Here's a list of things to consider, based on your needs and your budget.
Depending on your needs
Thermal insulation
You're about to build a conservatory to enlarge your home. It will become a room in its own right. Temperatures are of crucial importance. That's why you need to be able to live in your extension in winter as well as in the heat of summer.
Sound insulation
Just as essential as thermal performance, sound insulation allows you to feel at home...at home. With this type of bay window, you can say goodbye to noise pollution.
Security
It goes without saying that, because conservatories are essentially made of glass, the risk of burglary is pretty high. However, manufacturers are well aware of this and offer you security and burglar-resistant glazing.
Solar filtering
Much appreciated in winter, the sun can quickly make your conservatory uninhabitable in hot weather if the glazing has not been designed to filter its rays. The solar factor of a pane of glass should therefore be taken into account when making your choice.
Privacy
New technologies are making it possible to create innovative, intelligent glazing. Thanks to these developments, you can enjoy the benefits of opening up to the outside world while remaining protected from prying eyes.
Easy to clean
That's right, there's now self-cleaning glass! With this type of glass, you can reduce the frequency with which you clean your glass surfaces.
The different types of glazing
Depending on your needs, you'll find different types of glazing. A single pane of glass will generally meet several needs (single glazing has become obsolete because of its poor insulation, so we won't go into it here).
- Double glazing is the most common type. It provides good thermal insulation. It consists of 2 layers of glass separated by a layer of dehydrated air or argon gas.
- Triple glazing, which is thicker, adds good sound insulation.
- Safety glass is laminated glass with an integrated PVB film. This type of glass is often used for roofing. Conservatory windows are generally made of toughened safety glass. Contrary to what you might think, sound insulation is not necessarily linked to thermal insulation. However, sound-insulating glass can be combined with thermal insulation.
- Heated glass is an alternative to traditional heating. It diffuses heat evenly and does not dry out the air.
- SageGlass variable-tint glazing from Saint-Gobain is a new generation of glazing. It is a concept that allows you to enjoy the natural light in your conservatory without suffering from increased heat levels or solar glare. Thanks to this intelligent glazing, you can modulate the amount of light thanks to a switch with 4 tint levels. At the same time, it provides comfortable thermal and acoustic insulation, and is highly valued for its security and privacy.
Glazing prices
Depending on the size of the bay window, the size of your conservatory and thethickness of the glazing, prices can vary significantly. From standard double glazing to solar control glazing, prices can range from €70 to €250 per m². Your choice of builder is very important, as he will be able to guide you and offer you a solution that suits your budget.
