Free-standing carport

Freestanding carport: an independant vehicle shelter

The main function of a carport is to shelter vehicles. It protects them from the elements and preserves them from external aggressions such as UV rays or falling branches. The better the roof of your carport, the more your car is protected. That's why there are many types of materials that can be used to make a carport roof: it's the main element!

There are two types of carport:

  • the freestanding carport, the star of our article;
  • the lean-to carport, which is attached to the front of the house.

The freestanding carport is also referred to by other names: self-supporting carport, island carport.

Various roofing materials are available. Consider a blackout solution. Polycarbonate is a good choice because it is cheaper and lighter than glass, while blackout panels are opaque and therefore provide better insulation.

All your questions about the free-standing carport

What are the advantages of an island carport?

This type of carport is unique in that it is freestanding. That is to say, it stands on 4 or 6 pillars, depending on the chosen length. It can be installed anywhere, isolated at the end of your garden for more discretion or, on the contrary, prominently displayed for a contemporary look. No walls, no constraints, it blends into the environment and merges with the existing.

The ideal material for a free-standing carport is aluminium. This material is strong yet malleable, enabling the creation of sleek, designer structures. Another advantage, and by no means the least: an aluminium carport is very easy to maintain!

When it comes to the roof of a self-supporting aluminium carport, the main thing is that it is strong enough to protect your car from falling branches or snow drifts in winter. However, the roofing materials used in modern carports offer much more than just protection from the elements. Sandwich panels, triple glazing and sound and heat insulation mean that your car is pampered day after day! And for optimal comfort, you can add additional options such as solar control or LED lighting.

The free-standing carport (or self-supporting carport) is suitable for many types of space. Whether you have a large outdoor area or a simple space that can be converted to accommodate your car, this carport will meet your needs.

At Akena, all carports are made of aluminium and the roofs are made of polycarbonate, opaque panels or laminated glass.

  • 4 to 6 posts provide perfect support for the roof, for maximum protection against bad weather, sunlight and strong winds;
  • no need for a supporting wall or to drill holes in the front of the house;
  • aluminium is a modern, solid and extremely easy to maintain material;
  • the roofing materials are light, resistant and treated (anti-UV, anti-yellowing);
  • the contemporary design of the freestanding carport adds value to your property;
  • easy manoeuvring, as the shelter is open at all 4 corners;
  • possibility of creating a space to shelter garden furniture, tools or any other equipment;
  • possibility of adding privacy screens for more privacy and protection;
  • the freestanding carport can be transformed into a pergola when the vehicle is not parked;
  • the length of a wall is no longer a constraint, allowing you to create your own customised dimensions (double carport, for example);
  • the height of a wall is no longer a constraint, you can install a carport for large vehicles (camper vans, vans, etc.);
  • numerous options are available: LED spotlight with motion detector, remote-controlled LED strip, electrical sockets, aluminium privacy screen, etc.
  • the Akena XL posts option allows the pillars to be adjusted to the existing layout and facilitates manoeuvring.

What budget should I allow for a free-standing carport?

Like any shelter, the price of a freestanding aluminium carport will depend on its size. In addition to the aluminium used for the structure, the price of the roof also varies according to the type of covering installed. Depending on your needs, you may also want to add additional equipment, such as that listed in the previous paragraph.

Allow around €400/m² for a freestanding aluminium carport, including installation and manufacturer's warranty. If you choose to think big with a custom-made double carport, we estimate the installation at €830/m².
