Material for a carport

Products, choice of use: discover the different solutions for covering and protecting your vehicle, their advantages and disadvantages. For this type of project, the material you choose is essential, and must be adapted to the climate of your region. Different types of carports are available in France. Quality of materials, shape, aesthetics, roofing, equipment, options - all these points need to be looked at in detail to make the right choice.

Wooden carports

Combining traditional style and warmth, wooden carports are the most popular in France. They blend in well with their natural surroundings and are easy to install outside. The real disadvantage of wood is maintenance. As a natural material, it's impossible to let your wooden carport age without regularly maintaining it with several coats of specific treatment every year.

If you opt for wood, don't forget: choose a type of wood suited to the climatic conditions. Softwoods such as spruce, northern fir and Douglas pine are preferable. Carports with a class 4 wooden structure are preferred for their watertightness.

By definition, this type of carport is not ideal for rainy or windy regions.

Steel carports

You'll also find carport structures made of steel, and in particular very light steel, very often from Asian countries.

Be wary of the quality and durability of this type of material. Even though the cost may seem very reasonable, the real disadvantage of this type of material lies in its ageing due to rust. An anti-rust treatment is required once a year. In other words, forget about the longevity of your carport with this type of material. You'll certainly have to renew your purchase after a few years.

Aluminium carports

Our advice is to opt for an aluminium carport project. This is the material with the most advantages: solidity, mechanical strength and low maintenance. It's perfectly suited to rainy and windy climates, and to both mountainous and maritime environments.

As with conservatory and pergola projects, aluminium is the material of choice for outdoor constructions. It is perfectly suited to bespoke projects, such as Akena carports. Their modernity and durability are undeniable assets. What's more, they require no special maintenance. Just clean with water and natural products once or twice a year.
