Do you have 2 cars and are you looking for a way to protect them without investing in long and costly constructions? The 2-car carport is a practical and economical solution. Built to measure, this shelter can be adapted to your budget, the dimensions of your vehicles and your outdoor space. Let's look at the existing solutions so that you can make an informed choice in line with your needs.

Carport for 2 cars: think big!

An alternative to a garage, the major advantage of a carport is the ease with which the driver can manoeuvre to park his car.

Without walls, parking your vehicle becomes child's play! If you want to park two cars, the manoeuvre will remain easy thanks to the customised dimensions. If, on the other hand, you only have one car, it is quite possible that in the future you will need to park a second one. It is not uncommon for couples to have two cars. Children grow up and get their licence... There are as many possibilities as there are families.

As building a carport is a long-term investment, choosing a double carport can be a wise choice, even if you currently only own one car.

What are the dimensions for a double aluminium carport?

All Akena carports are made of aluminium, a durable and robust material. Whether it is free-standing or lean to your house, your carport protects your car from the elements and the damage they cause:

  • rain;
  • wind;
  • piles of dead leaves;
  • snow;
  • hail;
  • the sun's rays;
  • heat;
  • falling branches;
  • bird droppings, etc.

It also protects your vehicles from prying eyes by adding certain equipment such as sunbreakers.

To determine the dimensions of your carport for 2 cars, several factors must be taken into account. Therefore, make sure that:

  • you will be able to park your vehicles easily;
  • you will be able to move around the vehicles and open the doors of one without damaging the other;
  • there is sufficient space in front of and behind the cars.

Whether you have city cars or SUVs, a fairly simple and effective way to find out the ideal dimensions of your future carport is to use visual cues. Mark the outlines of your vehicles on the ground, then try it out to determine whether it is practical and easily accessible.

It is always preferable to plan for relatively large dimensions in order to avoid having to do more work later. You never know what the future will bring. You may want to change your car for a bigger model. It would be a shame to limit your choice of vehicle because your carport is too small!

The standard dimensions of a single carport are 3.5 metres by 7.2 metres. It is recommended to double the width to add a vehicle.

This gives, for a standard double carport: 7 m by 7.2 m if the cars are parked side by side. However, the more space there is, the more comfortable it will be for you to walk around your cars, settle your family in, take out your shopping, etc.

Some large double carports can be up to 15 metres long! The dimensions will also be adjusted to the type of carport and its equipment.

For greater comfort, a 2-car carport attached to your house and equipped with a privacy screen may be wider than a double carport on its own without side walls.

How much does a 2-car aluminium flat-roof carport cost?

In the same way as for dimensions, the price of a double carport fluctuates according to different parameters. Of course, the options should be taken into account, but also the materials of the structure and the roof. A free-standing carport (known as a ‘island’ carport) is generally more expensive than a lean-to carport since it does not have a wall to support it.

Here are some relevant questions to ask yourself to determine the budget to allocate to your double carport:

  • Attached or free-standing carport?
  • Aluminium or wooden carport? Aluminium is a less expensive and more robust material than wood, and does not require any specific treatment;
  • What size for your double carport?
  • Flat or sloping roof carport?
  • Polycarbonate, glass or sandwich panel roofing?
  • What additional equipment? There are many options such as LED lighting, electrical sockets, privacy screens or even XL posts!

You can also decide to build a closed carport. Halfway between a classic carport and a garage, all you need to do is add side partitions. These aluminium privacy screens, cousins of trellises, are made up of fixed solid or slotted slats. Safety, protection and privacy guaranteed!
