One example of its use dates back to the garden at Orsan priory, where a pergola supports vines, providing delicate shade for the terrace. Today, pergolas are frequently combined with party tents, barnums and arbours. New materials such as aluminium are now being incorporated to reinforce the structure. Initially adjacent to the house, the pergola has evolved to become a living space in its own right.
