Lean-to carport
A lean-to carport is mounted against the front or wall of the house. It is installed on two or three posts positioned at the front of the structure and screwed to the ground on concrete blocks.
Do you want to protect your vehicle from the elements? You don't have a garage and you're hesitating between a lean-to carport and a freestanding carport. In this article, we explain in detail the characteristics of a lean-to carport and what it brings to your property.

All your questions about the lean-to carport
-
What is the difference between a lean-to carport and a free-standing carport?
-
As the name suggests, a lean-to carport is attached to the front of the house. The free-standing carport (also known as a self-supporting carport) is independent.
Particularités d’un carport adossé
The carport attached to the wall is supported by a beam fixed to the front of a house and at least two posts on the opposite side.
It has the advantage of being installed close to the house, which increases protection:
- the car is better protected from the elements thanks to the wall;
- you and your family are better protected by reducing the distance between your house and the shelter. This distance can be eliminated if you create direct access from your home.
Particularités d’un carport autoporté
The free-standing (or island) carport is freestanding. Thanks to its four posts that support the roof, it does not need to be attached to a wall. The larger the carport, the more posts it has. The same goes for the lean-to carport.
A freestanding carport can be installed wherever you like. You won't be hindered by a wall when manoeuvring. However, the large openings allow the wind to rush under the carport and bring in dead leaves and other plant debris. This phenomenon can be counteracted by installing side screens.
-
What shape will the roof of your lean-to carport be?
-
There are carports with sloping roofs, as is the case with our porch carport. The aluminium porch carport facilitates the drainage of rainwater and snow. It is 100% waterproof and adapts to your needs and especially to existing structures!
The flat-roof lean-to carport is perfect for sunny regions. However, it adapts to any type of climate because the rainwater is drained at the base of the posts through the peripheral gutter.
-
What materials are available on the carport market?
-
Whether they are in kit form or custom-made, today's carports have structures made of wood or aluminium. Lean-to carports made of iron and PVC are becoming less and less common.
We mainly offer carports for cars in powder-coated aluminium because it is the easiest material to maintain. In addition, it is robust, strong and durable. It fits harmoniously into your outdoor environment, both in terms of its aesthetic curves and the wide choice of colours.
-
What roofing materials should I use for a lean-to carport?
-
Modern carports benefit from new technologies. Nowadays, users expect more than just protection from the elements!
Roofs also provide protection against UV rays and heat. They also reduce noise and heat thanks to better insulation.
Here are the roofing materials that might appeal to you:
- polycarbonate is a honeycomb component that lets in light. It is treated to be UV-resistant and anti-yellowing. A ‘solar control’ option is available to increase the effectiveness of the protection;
- laminated glass brings natural light into the carport. Impact-resistant, it protects your car from falling branches;
- the insulating panel or sandwich panel is a foam material that stops solar radiation. This insulating roof protects your car from heat and an enhanced sound insulation option is available.
The custom-made aluminium lean-to carports have the advantage of meeting your desires and needs. The manufacturers will be able to advise and guide you in your choices.
