The characteristics of a 3-post carport
A 3-post carport allows you to create a large shelter. You can choose to install this type of structure to shelter one or two cars. The 3-post carport is inevitably leaned against a wall. It is usually attached to the house by a beam, with the 3 posts on the front supporting the roof in parallel.
This type of lean-to carport is 6 to 8 metres long. As we have just seen, this length makes it possible to protect two vehicles, but not only.
Here is a sample of ideas for which you might want to build a 3-post carport:
- - to protect a car and guarantee ultra-comfortable manoeuvring;
- - to easily shelter 2 cars;
- parking a camper van during the winter (be careful with the height of the carport!);
- sheltering a car and creating space for your two-wheeled vehicles;
- protecting your car from the elements and also creating a workbench or storage space for your tools;
- sheltering agricultural machinery (again, be careful with the height of the roof).
It is possible to build a carport of this size to shelter your cars independently of your home. To do this, it will have at least 6 posts (3 on each side).

Various roofing materials are available. You will like glass for its total transparency. Then consider a blackout solution. You will appreciate polycarbonate for its lower cost compared to glass and its lightness, or blackout panels for their opacity and therefore better insulation qualities.
