An ideal way of enlarging your home without the need for major works, a 20 m² conservatory can be used for a wide range of extension projects. The model and materials of the structure, type of glazing and insulation, integrated shutters and accessories... The cost of this enlargement depends on a number of criteria. So how do you calculate the price of a 20 m² conservatory? Here are some tips and explanations.

A 20 m² conservatory, the ideal solution for enlarging your home

Installing a conservatory is an easy way to increase the living space in your home, and create a pleasant, light-filled new living area. And choosing a 20 m² conservatory offers a number of advantages...

Plenty of extra space for all types of rooms

A 20 square metre conservatory also provides plenty of extra floor space, which can be used to create all kinds of rooms: a living room, dining room or winter lounge, a new kitchen or guest bedroom, a workshop or a large ground-floor master suite... Some people even choose to install a gym or spa!

Bright, well-insulated and comfortable, this new room lets you enjoy the arrival of fine weather and a beautiful view over the garden more quickly. Made from high-quality, durable materials, it is perfectly resistant to the elements and bad weather, and can be used all year round.

Conservatory price 20m2: what factors should be taken into account when estimating the price?

In kit form or made-to-measure, in PVC, wood or aluminium, with double glazing, roller shutters or integrated spotlights... To suit every aesthetic preference and budget, there are many conservatory models on the market today. And while the size of the conservatory necessarily has an impact on its overall cost, there are other factors to consider when estimating the price of a conservatory. So what are the factors that can affect the price of a 20 m² conservatory?

A kit or made-to-measure conservatory?

Conservatories in kit form are cheaper to buy and quicker to install. They do, however, require good manual skills (and a lot of patience!) to install, and are more commonly available for smaller areas. These ‘standard’ conservatories are generally made from less efficient and less resistant materials, and are also less well insulated and less durable (which justifies their price).

If you want to add 20 m² of living space to your home, it's best to opt for a made-to-measure conservatory. Designed and installed by a professional according to the rules of the trade, it guarantees you a comfortable, durable new living space for many years to come. Shape, colour, type of roof and openings... Tailor-made conservatories also allow you to choose the best finishes, for an extension that blends in perfectly with your home.

PVC, wood, wrought iron or aluminium?

The average price of a conservatory per m² then depends on the materials used for its structure:

  • PVC (around €15,000 for 20 m²): offered at attractive prices, PVC conservatories are also easy to maintain. However, they are the least resilient over the long term
  • Wooden conservatories (around €30,000 for 20 m²): offering an authentic, natural look, wooden conservatories are well insulated. To guarantee strength and durability, however, they have to be made from top-of-the-range wood species, and can be quite expensive. They also require regular maintenance
  • Steel or wrought iron (around €50,000 for 20 m²): adding a touch of design or an ‘artist's studio’ feel to the home, steel conservatories are very strong and durable. However, they are still the most expensive on the market, and require a lot of maintenance (including regular rustproofing).
  • aluminium (around €35,000 for a 20 m² conservatory): offering the best value for money, aluminium is still the ideal material for a 20 m² conservatory. Lightweight, robust and easy to maintain, it can be used to create modern, streamlined structures at an intermediate price. Today's assemblies and equipment also make it possible to avoid any energy losses.

Shape, glazing and roof of the conservatory

There are other factors to consider when estimating the price of a 20 m² conservatory:

The shape

Classic, Victorian, radiating or gabled conservatory... The more complex the shape of the conservatory, the more expensive it will be. In fact, a glazed room with many angles or rounded corners will be more difficult to create and will take longer to install (and therefore more expensive than a straight conservatory with a single slope).

The glazing

Although more expensive than single glazing, double or triple glazing means you can enjoy your conservatory all year round, thanks to optimum thermal insulation (which is just as important in summer as it is in winter). This type of glazing guarantees better energy performance, so you can make substantial savings in the long term. It's also advisable to opt for burglar-resistant laminated glass, which is essential for limiting intruders in this easily accessible room.

The roof

The roof of a 20m2 conservatory can be made of simple opaque panels (sandwich panels), polycarbonate panels, glass or traditional materials (tile or slate roof). It can take a variety of shapes: pitched roof, flat roof, peaked roof, rounded or curved roof, etc. The materials and shape of the roof will also have a significant impact on the final cost of the conservatory.

What equipment, options and accessories?

The total price of a 20 m² conservatory depends on the options you choose. These days, you can add a number of features to your conservatory to enhance its comfort and performance:

  • Special glazing: fitted with special films, glazing that automatically regulates light levels by darkening (e.g. SageGlass from Akena). There is also reinforced thermal insulation glazing, solar control glazing to limit overheating, heated glazing for winter, etc.
  • Manual or electric interior blinds (rigid or fabric), adjustable sunbreakers, external roller shutters, ambient interior lighting with integrated spotlights, a skylight in the ceiling, a flat green roof...

The more equipment and the better it performs, the higher the overall cost of the conservatory. The budget will also depend on the interior installations required (heating and air conditioning, electricity, gas, plumbing, etc.), and whether or not you need to carry out certain preliminary work (earthworks, concrete slab or screed, etc.).
