Designing a conservatory means planning its interior furnishings, decoration and even its external environment. Ideally, the conservatory should blend in with the rest of the house. But you can also opt for a conservatory with its own style. The combination of old and new works well, for example. As a general rule, avoid placing furniture against the glass walls. For the remaining wall, light colours should be favoured, again to keep in the light.

Aside from these basic tips, here are a few tricks for designing your conservatory to suit its layout.

How do you fit out a small conservatory?

To visually enlarge the space in your conservatory, you should opt for a patternless floor: these tend to overload the room. On the other hand, a dark floor will give your conservatory more depth: waxed concrete or imitation concrete PVC is a good choice for a small conservatory. A floor that matches the colour scheme or appearance of the adjoining room will also help to visually increase the space of the conservatory and create a sense of extension.

The rest of the room will benefit from being furnished in light, bright tones. Limit the number of decorative objects. You can, however, add a few contrasting touches of colour with cushions or flowers. These can be placed on the floor or on furniture. Choose several varieties of plants for even more dynamism.

How do you fit out a 20m² conservatory?

In 20 m², you already have a large surface area that can become a real living room. You can convert your conservatory into an office, living room, bedroom, kitchen, etc.

To make the most of the space, you should opt for small or medium-sized furniture. Similarly, choose furniture that is low to the ground, so that you can keep the view outside and maximise the amount of natural light. This will keep the room uncluttered, with plenty of room to move around.

When it comes to fabrics, bear in mind that they will be exposed to sunlight all year round. Opt for materials that will retain their lustre even after several seasons.

How do you create a long conservatory?

In a long conservatory, it's a good idea to create different spaces by using different types of lighting. A floor lamp, a ceiling lamp, but also lights placed at different levels will be welcome. For the floor, you'll prefer boards positioned perpendicular to the longest walls.

Take the opportunity to create different zones by arranging your furniture to create a living room and dining room, or a living room and reading area, for example. The furniture or a carpet, for example, can be used to define the boundaries. In a long space, you can play around with round or oval tables, and seats where you can curl up, more circular in shape to break up the angular aspect.

How do you create a rectangular conservatory?

The rectangular shape is fairly classic for a conservatory. Depending on its surface area, you can turn it into the room you want. It's perfectly possible to create two spaces in a rectangular conservatory, such as a dining room and a lounge area, or a lounge and a library area, or an office. The spaces can be distinguished by the furniture, but it's always best to choose lower furniture to keep the field of vision clear and maximise the amount of light.

When it comes to materials, there's plenty to choose from. Rattan is back in fashion, while wood has always been. Metal and glass accentuate the room's luminosity. Modern resins are resistant to all lighting and living conditions. You can even put a rug on the floor and picture frames on the wall adjoining the house. The important thing is to please yourself!
