Pool house design: a modern touch to enhance your garden

The pool house is a living space like no other, located outside the house. Storage shed? No. Garden shed? Definitely not! The pool house isn't an extension either: it's an individual living space built into the garden, right next to the pool. Whether it's a summer kitchen, bar, spa or workshop, the designer version of the pool house can be used for a whole range of different purposes, offering exciting prospects for homeowners who want to invest 100% of their garden space while adding value to their property. How do you build and fit out a unique designer pool house that looks like no other? Here's how.

Why install a pool house in your garden?

The designer pool house adds a touch of sophistication and modernism to any outdoor setting. But that's far from being its only advantage! Building a pool house will allow you to :

  • Adding character to your exterior. A designer module installed next to your swimming pool will contrast with more traditional architecture and give your garden the elegance and even distinction it so desperately needs. Composed of composite wood, aluminium and glazing, the pool house reveals the potential of your garden by blending into its surroundings.
  • Adding value to your home. Let's not forget that a pool house is an extra room that allows you to make the most of your land. In fact, it can be installed on plots of any size!
  • Optimum comfort in summer and winter. For some people, a pool house is a place to relax. For others, it's an open-air gym. For others, the pool house is an intimate space for reading or relaxing. Whatever the case, this extra living space, tastefully decorated, gives you maximum comfort.

What does a designer garden room look like?

As a totally independent living space, the pool house has the advantage of being available in a multitude of forms. First of all, the roof can be flat, with one or two slopes. A flat-roofed pool house, for example, is more modern, while a gable roof affirms the traditional character of your structure. As for the roofing material, this too needs to be chosen with care if you're looking for a modern look. Say goodbye to tiles! Charming though they may be, they are more suited to the design of a Provencal pool house. Flat roofs in composite materials or aluminium are preferable. They can even be slotted!

Tip: For a particularly stylish pool house, opt for made-to-measure solutions. Adding side protection, sound and light equipment or simply motorised screen blinds... all these little details will undoubtedly add to the modern look of your pool house.

All your questions about pool houses

What design style should you choose for your pool house?

3 styles to adopt.

Bohemian style

The characteristics of the bohemian style coincide perfectly with a modern, contemporary pool house. With its artistic inspiration and relaxed charm, this decorative style offers an unbeatable atmosphere to your outdoor space. It's often referred to as bohemian-chic. But where do you start if you want to move towards this style? Here are a few pointers.

  • Bohemian tones are particularly contemporary. Cream, beige and light brown are the colours of choice. Bolder colours are usually added through decorative objects (sculptures, photo frames, lamps or mirrors, etc.) and/or accessories (cushions, plaids, etc.).
  • Patterns: Bohemian patterns come in a multitude of forms and are constantly being reinvented: geometric, floral or ethnic, they add that special artistic touch that asserts your identity. Your pool house will be all the more remarkable for it!

Industrial style: timeless

When it comes to interior design, the industrial style, already well known to the general public, is never far behind. Striking for its loft orientation, which is still very much in fashion, it consists of a raw décor and the use of metal to create a particularly urban atmosphere.

Do you like the industrial style? You can decorate your designer pool house in the same way as your living spaces. It's even easier because your outdoor module can already be built in aluminium: all you need to do is add a few items of furniture to accentuate the overall style! These could include

  • A table or coffee table in raw wood, aluminium and/or recycled materials,
  • Decorative elements based on copper, steel or wrought iron, such as metal hanging baskets.

Scandinavian style for your summer pool house

The Scandinavian style blends in so well with modern, designer structures because it's based largely on light colours, clean-lined furniture and the use of wood, a timeless feature of interior design. Dressing a pool house in Scandinavian colours also means including nature in your interior design. What could be more appropriate for a living room that opens onto the outdoors? If you'd like to enjoy a Scandinavian-style designer pool house, here's some information you might find useful:

  • First and foremost, natural materials are widely used. Light wood, such as oak or birch, is often used for floors, furniture and accessories. Natural textiles such as linen and cotton are preferred for curtains, cushions and rugs.
  • To add warmth and texture to the space, you can then use soft, comfortable textiles. Wool rugs, synthetic fur cushions, knitted plaids and sheepskins are often used to create a warm atmosphere.
  • Finally, the Scandinavian style favours natural light. Spaces are often bright, open and airy. Large windows are used to maximise the entry of light, while curtains are often light and transparent to allow the light to penetrate. Think about this when designing your designer pool house!

Why install a summer kitchen in a pool house?

Convenience, versatility, entertainment... installing a summer kitchen in a designer pool house is one of the trends of the moment, and it's easy to see why!

  • The practical summer kitchen allows you to make the most of your garden and your guests, while preparing your meals. No more trips to the kitchen! It's now possible to enjoy all the equipment you need to prepare meals without having to leave the sun or your loved ones behind.
  • Just like the kitchen in your main home, your outdoor kitchen brings people together. It's a meeting place! Your designer pool house can also be transformed into an entertainment area. Simply add garden furniture or an outdoor bar to bring all your guests together in a setting that's conducive to relaxation and fun.

Note: Don't forget that building a designer pool house also adds considerable value to your property! Adding a fully-equipped summer kitchen to your pool house is sure to attract new buyers.

Is it possible to build a storage area into a pool house?

As we've seen, the designer pool house has a contemporary look that's in tune with the times... sometimes almost avant-garde! But you'd still like to take advantage of this extra space to store your garden equipment... and quite rightly so. Rest assured: a designer pool house can also house a storage room out of sight, making it an all-in-one space. In fact, it's one of its main functions!

How do you go about it? By building an open, semi-open or closed annex. Pool house designs are designed to be customisable and modular. The presence of an enclosed annex, perfectly integrated into the overall structure, is an undeniable guarantee of practicality, which in no way detracts from the contemporary design of the pool house. When it comes to choosing the size and position of the annex, choose from the most fashionable wall materials of the moment: unfinished or composite wood slats, clapboard cladding, glazed partition walls, and so on.

Now there's nothing to hold you back! Store your machinery, garden or swimming accessories in the specially designed annex. Sheltered from the elements, your equipment is just a door handle away!
