Who hasn't wanted to enjoy their garden in summer and winter, or gaze at the sky from their bed? Building a conservatory makes this dream come true.

How to build a conservatory?

You can build a conservatory yourself, but you still need the right support. It's a major project, involving the building of a solid, hard structure that will stand the test of time.

The first step, once you've drawn up your plans, is to lay the foundations for your conservatory. Once the concrete slab has been poured, you'll need to wait several weeks for it to dry.

You can then erect your conservatory. The easiest way to do this is to start with a kit, either pre-formatted or made-to-measure, especially in aluminium. These kits contain everything you need to build your Conservatory: the structure and walls of the conservatory, the glazing (single or double), the guttering, the roof and the assembly parts. It will take several days to assemble everything. This work requires attention, especially to ensure that the conservatory's insulation meets your expectations and complies with regulations.

How do you have your conservatory built?

While self-build conservatories can be tempting for those on a limited budget, it's still safer to go to a professional for installation. That's the only guarantee you'll get a new living space that's well insulated and well equipped.

A conservatory builder and installer will also guide you through the key stages of building a conservatory:

  • Ideal orientation of the conservatory,
  • Land conformity,
  • Planning regulations to be complied with,
  • Water and electricity supplies,
  • Type of material to choose,
  • Ancillary equipment (lighting and heating, in particular, but also electric shutters).

Between your first meeting with a professional and the day your conservatory is actually operational, it will also take several months (particularly for the compulsory declarations to the town hall), but you'll have nothing to do but dream about your new living space.

And afterwards, you'll have a guarantee that your house extension will be watertight and durable. Let's get your project under way!

Building your conservatory step by step

To make this dream come true, AKENA supports you every step of the way. The first step before building a conservatory is a personalised study and validation of your project with your AKENA conservatory specialist.

This will give you the opportunity to think about and answer the questions that are crucial to getting the most out of your home extension. This will be the time to ask yourself whether you want to enjoy your conservatory all year round, as a real living room, or whether you'll only be using it on sunny days.

Insulation and heating will depend on your answers.

Then there's the question of location. For this, you'll need to consider its orientation (conservatories facing east and south-east are among the most pleasant). As well as its position in relation to your house: conservatories have been built in between two walls, for example. Its shape, surface area and type of roof will define its appearance. Your conservatory can blend in with the architecture of your home, but there are many choices, from the most traditional to the most modern.

You'll also need to consider the materials: wood, metal, PVC or aluminium. As well as the type of glazing and the roof that will enclose the conservatory. And the type of opening you prefer.

Each of the answers to these questions will enable us to work together to draw up plans for a truly personalised conservatory. And, above all, one that meets your needs and your dream of a glazed extension.

Next comes the administrative formalities. The masonry work and its inspection, the production of the final plans after the measurements have been taken at your home, the manufacture of the conservatory, its delivery and then its installation by AKENA professionals, make up the next 5 stages, or seven steps towards perfect conservatory construction.

These successive stages will have enabled you to study the different technical options available to you. They will also have enabled you to check, by means of a computer simulation, that the model and design of the conservatory you have chosen fits in well with your house and garden, so that you can be sure that you are building your conservatory.
