Modern conservatories are so well insulated that you can enjoy them all year round. Some people even have a bedroom or bathroom in their conservatory! Here are some tips on how to insulate your conservatory properly.

How can I prevent damp in a conservatory?

Problems of condensation in the conservatory, with water droplets or mist appearing on the windows, are common. While it's normal to see this from time to time, when there's a big difference in temperature between inside and outside, it becomes more of a nuisance when the damp settles in on a regular basis.

How to dehumidify a conservatory?

The first step is to open the conservatory regularly to air it out. This will renew the ambient air and remove some of the moisture in the atmosphere.

You can also install ventilation grilles in the windows or doors. These will also help to renew the air.

Finally, you can opt for a dehumidifier, which will purify the room: some models can absorb up to 25 litres of water.

How do you insulate a conservatory against the cold?

Does it get cold in a conservatory? Normally not, but the panes of glass that contribute to the sun's rays act as thermal bridges. Double glazing is therefore a minimum to create a break with the cold outside.

To bring warmth into your conservatory, think about the floor too: tiling will be colder underfoot than wood. To accentuate the impression of comfort, you can add carpets to cover the chosen floor covering.

As in the rest of the house, curtains and shutters will also help to keep out the heat.

How do you keep a conservatory warm?

The construction materials used have a direct impact on the insulation of your conservatory. We advise you to opt for an aluminium profile with a thermal break, which insulates against the cold or heat from outside.

You should also pay particular attention to the glazing in your conservatory. Choose double glazing to prevent heat loss. The roof is also a crucial element. At AKENA, we've designed a conservatory roof with a double insulating panel that provides 50% more thermal insulation than a conventional roof.

What type of heating should be installed in a conservatory?

To insulate your conservatory properly, the choice of heating system is also crucial. There are several solutions to choose from. Does your house have an efficient central heating system? Install radiators in your conservatory and connect them to your main heating system. Just check that your boiler is powerful enough for this extra room. Installing underfloor heating is also an excellent option for even, pleasant warmth.

You can also opt for energy-efficient electric convector heaters to keep your electricity bill down, or for a heat pump, often recommended for its efficiency. Finally, a wood-burning stove is an authentic solution, but one that should be handled with care. To choose the right heating system, you should also consider the orientation of your conservatory.

How do you soundproof a conservatory?

The sound of rain crashing against the conservatory roof can be annoying, but it doesn't have to be. To reduce it, you can opt for a solid slate or tiled roof, which will insulate your conservatory both thermally and acoustically.

However, if you prefer open-plan conservatories, you should be aware that double glazing, which is now the norm, also drowns out outside noise. It will be much more effective against noise than a polycarbonate roof. You could even opt for triple glazing if you're very sensitive to noise!

If your conservatory is already built, you can also decide to add external roller shutters, which will reduce the noise of the rain.

How do you insulate the roof of a conservatory?

Insulating the roof of your conservatory will not be the same if you want to keep it transparent.

In this case, you should opt for double or even triple glazing. There is also double glazing with reinforced insulation (VIR): a gas such as argon is inserted between the two panes to reinforce the insulation, without taking anything away from its transparency.

If you opt for an opaque roof, an insulating panel, known as a sandwich panel, is still the best technical solution for enjoying your conservatory all year round.

For optimum insulation of your conservatory, the choice of equipment is crucial. Blinds or roller shutters will be invaluable in insulating your home extension from wide variations in temperature, summer and winter alike. You should also choose a light colour, whether for your internal blinds or your external roller shutters.

Roof blackouts should also be chosen with care, as they are highly effective in combating the greenhouse effect in your conservatory and keeping out the cold. AKENA offers two models of automatic and sliding roof awnings.

Finally, ventilation is also an important element in insulating your house extension. Regularly renewing the air will prevent the formation of water vapour and humidity.
