High thermal performance conservatories in summer and winter: what are the solutions?

Gone are the classic single glazed conservatories of yesteryear, made of exotic wood or of poor quality, which made it impossible to use this living space in both winter (because it froze) and summer (because it was stifling).

Today, in the age of RT 2012, conservatories are made of aluminium or mixed wood/aluminium with profiles that have a total thermal break, and are fitted with thermal quality glazing, double or even triple glazing, responding to our legitimate concern tosave energy, as much for our wallets as for the protection of our planet.

When it comes to conservatories with thermal glass, there are coefficients that determine the quality of the glass and therefore its degree of thermal performance throughout the year:

• The U or Ug coefficient of thermal transmission or performance: the lower the coefficient, the higher the thermal performance of your conservatory. This coefficient can be as high as 0.6 for triple glazing. Depending on how you intend to use your conservatory and the budget you have available, our conservatory specialists will be able to advise you on the choice of single double glazing, double glazing with argon gas insulation and low-emissivity film, High Thermal Insulation double glazing or Reinforced Insulation double glazing (VIR).
• The transparency coefficient or light transmission (TL). The higher the TL, the better the light transmission.
• The light reflection coefficient: the more reflective the glazing, the better its thermal performance.

In addition to glazing, there are other technical options for modulating the thermal performance of a conservatory and enjoying an ideal temperature all year round (with the addition, of course, like all living rooms in the house, of appropriate heating in winter): electric roller shutters, adjustable sunbreakers, double-panel roof with two thermal break lines, aluminium profiles, roof shading systems, etc.
