When it comes to building an outdoor shelter, it's common to hesitate between a bioclimatic pergola and a house porch. Although these two installations have similarities, they also have a major difference: one has a modular roof, the other a fixed cover.

Porch for the house: a fixed installation in the garden

The house porch takes the form of a covered structure that opens onto the outside. Like a pergola, there are no walls to enclose the space. However, it does have a hard roof, usually with a wooden frame and tiles. That's why the porch is often designed to match the house. Another major difference is that it can be installed anywhere in the garden, not just against the front. Like a bioclimatic pergola, a porch can be used for many purposes. Whether it's a terrace, a play area or a barbecue area, this multi-purpose installation will add value to your home. The porch has one specific feature that should not be underestimated: its hard cover prevents the sun's rays from getting through, limiting potential sunbathing sessions.

Bioclimatic pergola: a flexible opening

Unlike a house porch, a bioclimatic pergola has a modular roof. Thanks to adjustable aluminium slats, you can open or close the cover. Depending on the intensity of the light, you can adjust the degree of sunlight, so you can make the most of the fine weather and protect yourself in case of rain. Mainly used as a semi-covered terrace, the bioclimatic pergola is installed on the front of the house. It's more comfortable to use on a daily basis than a porch, especially if it's fitted with motorised slats and motorised side awnings that open and close automatically.
