You've installed the bioclimatic pergola of your dreams and are enjoying your new living space. You're proud of the aesthetics of your pergola, and of all its features, which often leave your guests in awe! To make the most of your pergola for many years to come, it needs regular maintenance. Cleaning the slats of your bioclimatic pergola will help extend its life.

Clean the slats of your bioclimatic pergola twice a year

Modern bioclimatic pergolas are made of aluminium. Aluminium structures are very easy to maintain and require less upkeep than a wooden pergola, for example. We recommend cleaning your bioclimatic aluminium pergola twice a year.

Once before the summer period and again in autumn, when the fine weather becomes scarcer. Of course, when we talk about cleaning the slats, it goes without saying that the whole structure is involved. This means washing and maintaining the pillars, gutters and various mechanisms.

Water and soap are all you need to clean the slats of a bioclimatic pergola

Cleaning something as imposing as a bioclimatic pergola can seem tedious at first glance. You might even want to invest in detergents of varying degrees of abrasiveness and toxicity, at the risk of damaging the pergola and its slats. But the only things you need for thorough maintenance and cleaning are :

  • a sponge ;
  • lukewarm water
  • Soap (washing-up liquid is fine);
  • a bristle brush;
  • a soft cloth (microfibre style).

Once you've got these items together, start by removing any dead leaves that have piled up in the gutters. You can also take the opportunity to dust the entire structure with a bristle brush. Next, you'll need to use your elbow grease to wash the adjustable slats of your bioclimatic pergola. The more often you clean them, the quicker it will be.

Start by gently rubbing each slat with a soft sponge dampened with soapy water. If stains persist, white vinegar works wonders! Once this stage has been completed, simply rinse with clean water. You can use a jet of water for this, but don't use a Karcher-style high-pressure cleaner! It could damage the aluminium or the mechanics of the pergola. To avoid streaking, don't hesitate to use a soft cloth after rinsing.
