A bioclimatic pergola: what is it?
-
Before comparing the different types of bioclimatic pergolas, let's take a look at the main function of a bioclimatic pergola.
The term ‘bioclimatic’ refers to a construction designed to make use of renewable energies. A bioclimatic building adapts to the climate of the area in which it is located and uses its resources to derive benefits from them in the most natural way possible.
Choosing this approach allows you to reduce your energy consumption and make savings while preserving the environment.

In our case, a bioclimatic pergola exploits the natural elements thanks to its roof made up of adjustable slats or retractable sliding panels. Both solutions allow you to benefit from the sun's heat and natural ventilation by creating a light breeze, while protecting you from UV rays and bad weather such as rain and wind. Thermal comfort is at its peak and you save on heating, air conditioning and electricity.
The price of a bioclimatic pergola varies according to its type and equipment. It will obviously be higher than the price of a traditional pergola, but the savings made in the long term will be considerable. In addition to this is the cost of installation, if it is custom-made. The different models of bioclimatic pergolas
The main difference between a traditional pergola and a bioclimatic pergola is the design of the roof. The roof of a classic pergola can be made of glass or have fixed beams. It is rarely modular. It is sometimes possible to open it if it has an opening roof, but it does not allow you to tame the natural elements.
Bioclimatic pergolas include:

The pergolas with adjustable slats
The roof can be adjusted thanks to its motorised slats. They can be tilted from 0° to 90°, or even 135° in the case of the Akena. This feature allows you to close the roof for protection and at the same time benefit from a wide opening angle that allows light to enter, so you can enjoy your shelter in all weathers and in all seasons.

Pergolas with retractable roofing
The roof is similar to that of a classic pergola, made of polycarbonate or a Thermotop-type blackout panel, with the big difference that the roof opens to create ventilation and cool the air on the terrace.
The positioning of a bioclimatic pergola
As with conventional pergolas, there are several models of bioclimatic pergolas:

The lean-to bioclimatic pergola
The lean-to bioclimatic pergola is fixed to the wall of the house. It usually has two posts. Often custom-built, it allows for even greater energy savings. On hot days, the sun's rays will heat up the inside of the house less, saving you from having to install an air conditioner. In winter, the closed slats make it easier to keep the heat inside the house. The lean-to pergola is an extension of the house, a new living space.

The free-standing or island bioclimatic pergola
The free-standing bioclimatic pergola is mounted on four posts, so it does not need to be attached to a front. On the terrace or in the garden, it can be installed anywhere, provided its feet are firmly fixed in the ground. The free-standing pergola offers you a little corner of paradise wherever you want it. Whether freestanding or lean-to, the prices of aluminium bioclimatic pergolas vary from €500 to €1000 per square metre.
Bioclimatic pergola: protection combined with resistance
Bioclimatic pergolas are designed to provide protection not only from the sun, but also from bad weather. To do this, they require extraordinary resistance.
- Protection from the sun: like all pergolas, the primary function of a bioclimatic pergola is to protect you from the sun's rays. Depending on the orientation of the slats, you can create shade and prevent UV rays from entering the shelter.
- Adjusting heat and light: in the same way, you can manage the temperature and brightness of your pergola. Thanks to the movable slats, you can play with natural ventilation to create a breath of fresh air that will help reduce the heat.
- Weather resistance: aluminium bioclimatic pergolas are ultra-resistant. In case of heavy rain, the rainwater is drained through gutters or directly through the slats, depending on the model chosen. The pivoting slats are designed to withstand winds of up to 200 km/h.

Which material should you choose for a bioclimatic pergola?
-
The first bioclimatic pergolas were made of wood. As wood is a material that is subject to deterioration, it must be treated against moisture, fungi and insect attack. It is increasingly being replaced by aluminium, which is highly resistant to climatic conditions. An aluminium pergola is attractive and extremely easy to maintain. What's more, aluminium is very malleable and available in several colours.
Bioclimatic PVC pergolas are also available. This material is certainly more affordable than aluminium, but it deteriorates much more quickly. The colour quickly becomes dull and PVC structures are more fragile over time.
Clearly, the market trend is moving massively towards custom-made aluminium bioclimatic pergolas, which are more robust and more aesthetically pleasing, giving the garden a contemporary style. They can be decorated without altering the structure, and a wide range of optional equipment is available.

What options can be included in the price of a bioclimatic pergola?
-
Additional equipment and installation should also be taken into account when calculating the cost of your future pergola. Manufacturers of contemporary and bioclimatic custom-made pergolas offer a whole range of options. These add comfort to your sheltered space, transforming it into a living space in its own right.
Here are a few examples:
- remote-controlled slat control,
- weather sensors,
- LED lighting with spotlights or strips,
- motorised blinds,
- sliding glass or glazed doors,
- heating,
- choice of colour,
- staggered posts.
