Generally built with oak posts and beams, these houses have infill walls, often made of cob, a mixture of earth and plant fibres. Beyond their picturesque aesthetic, these houses are also highly weather resistant, characterised by their ability to flex without breaking.
Rustic cottages for a renovation project
They embody the ‘romantic’ image of the countryside, with their gently sloping thatched roofs blending harmoniously with the landscape. The cottages were built with local materials, which testifies to a sustainable approach to construction. The stone or cob (clay, straw and sometimes a little lime) walls were coated with clay to reinforce them and make them waterproof. They provided natural insulation and effective thermal regulation, remaining cool in summer and retaining heat in winter.
