Energy savings of up to 28% thanks to the construction of a conservatory
Every year, almost 80,000 conservatories are built in Europe. The reason for this success is simple: this home extension adds extra space to the house and saves energy.
The SNFA (the professional organisation representing designers, manufacturers and installers specialising in exterior joinery made from aluminium profiles) commissioned a study from the Cardonnel Ingénierie thermal engineering consultancy on the impact of a conservatory on a home's heating requirements. The results of the study speak for themselves: in all configurations, the construction of a conservatory reduces the house's heating requirements.
The following criteria were taken into account:
- Whether the conservatory is heated or unheated
- The orientation of the conservatory
- Whether or not there is a window separating the house from the conservatory
- The size and use of the separating window
- The climate zone in which the house with conservatory is located.
In all cases, even with a heated conservatory, the results show that such an extension saves energy for the house's occupants.

With Akena, combine economy and ecology
AKENA specialises in the construction of conservatories and makes it a point of honour to design the best model to help you save energy. Orientation, choice of materials, necessary or unnecessary options... Everything is analysed with you to build a conservatory that is both useful and environmentally friendly.

A study by the Cardonnel thermal consultancy shows that adding a conservatory reduces the home's heating consumption. Beyond this simple construction, it's the whole upstream study that enables this extension to be optimised to the maximum. Of course, a sunny region means even greater energy savings.
That's why AKENA's advisers carry out a detailed site survey and determine whether or not facing south is the best solution. This is a fundamental principle of bioclimatic architecture.

The choice of conservatory heating should also be made with a clear conscience. Jean-Luc Marchand, General Delegate of the SNFA, explains that with a large separating window that can be opened if it is hotter in the conservatory than in the house, the conservatory acts as a thermal buffer. In other words, the conservatory stores heat which it then redistributes in the house.
To make real energy savings, it's essential to work with a conservatory professional. An amateur builder will not be able to take into account all the criteria needed to build a conservatory that is not only solid but also useful to the house.
